Japan Funds Access to Safe Water in Teso and Lango
H.E. Junzo Fujita, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will sign two contracts today at the Embassy of Japan, for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) totalling over 487 Million Uganda shillings (US$ 203,183) with the representatives of each recipient organization, working in the field of water and sanitation.
Through the Pentecostal Assemblies of God Soroti, the project will construct 12 boreholes in order to improve access to safe water for over 17,000 people in Soroti District. The average rate of access to safe water remains low at only 58% in Arapai, Gweri, Kamuda and Tubur Sub-Counties where the project will take place. Particularly, women and children bear a heavy burden to collect safe water, and many of them suffer from water borne diseases such as diarrhea and typhoid since they have to fetch unsafe drinking water from a nearby spring.Kole and Oyam Districts had been affected by 20 years of armed conflicts, and social services remain dysfunctional. Although the resettlement of internally displaced persons started in 2006, many people have no access to safe water in the districts. Through Christian Vision International, the project will construct 13 boreholes which will provide access to safe water for 13,415 people.
The GGP is a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to support community-based development projects. Since 1992, the Government of Japan has supported 181 projects so far in Uganda.
